Brown Trout and Waffles is Chris Sinden’s lighthearted reflection on the day-to-day life of a lone Englishman living in southern Norway. Divorced and in his mid-fifties, his life starts to unravel when the job he’d been offered in Norway disappears in a failed merger. Obstinacy gets the better of him, so he decides to make a go of it anyway. This book follows his many failures (and a few successes) as he strives to become part of the local community.

He joins ‘Asylum Seekers’ School’ to learn Norwegian and makes some unexpected friends. Once a week, this avid fly-fisherman escapes into the fells in search of “a bigger trout”. He is befriended by three ladies, an art historian, a birch bark weaver and a silversmith, who introduce him to their country’s customs and culture.

With no job prospects, the erstwhile art director becomes a self-taught linocut artist in an attempt to earn a meagre living. This tale chronicles a year that, through some quirk of fate, sees him transformed from an unknown Englishman into ‘The Artist with Dirty Habits’.
