In 2022 The Woodland Trust celebrated its 50th anniversary and a book produced in Norfolk by Mascot Media helped mark this milestone. Norfolk-based John D James was not only the Trust’s first employee but was to become the charity’s first chief executive. He is therefore uniquely placed to describe in detail the formative years of this innovative conservation body, acquiring and defending ancient woodlands throughout the UK. His period at the helm was one of rapid growth and saw the establishment of an important force in British nature conservation. The Woodland Trust provided access to its extensive image library for the numerous illustrations. The 160-page paperback also summarises the Trust’s achievements since the author stepped down.
"If you are interested in the history of UK nature conservation, this is required reading” – Mark Avery, nature writer
“…tells the powerful tale of how it all began” - Darren Moorcroft, Chief Executive, Woodland Trust
