The Mascot Media book on the linocuts and early art of Norfolk printmaker HJ Jackson won the biography & memoir category of the 2024 East Anglian Book Awards. Drawn to Print was produced as an edition of just 700 copies to help celebrate 70 years since John Jackson created his first linocut. The award was presented at the National Centre for Writing (Dragon Hall, Norwich) in February 2025 to Alan Marshall. Mascot Media titles had been short-listed on seven occasions since 2012, but this was the first win. Alan was however given the John Jarrold Trust New Writing Award in 2015 for The Artful Hare.
Mascot Media Ltd, the independent Norfolk Broads-based book publisher, ceased trading at the end of March 2025 and will no longer be providing a publishing service to artists, art groups and authors. This was a voluntary decision taken in the light of soaring book production costs and the increased difficulty in achieving national book sales. The entire back catalogue of Mascot Media books is now available from this website, where direct sales and limited trade supply will continue at least until the end of 2026.
Alan & Marion Marshall will continue to work on book projects with partners from the fields of art and nature, providing writing, editing, design, layout and photographic input on a freelance basis. We are happy to help produce beautiful books and even to help sell them – but are no longer able to finance book projects.
Coming in September 2025 is the David North book Life Changing: Cley and Salthouse Marshes. Produced by Mascot Media for the author, the book tells the story of a year on the much-loved north Norfolk NWT reserve. David, a former NWT employee and now volunteer reserve guide, takes us through the seasons and the varied wildlife on the marshes. A magical journey illustrated by some of the best wildlife artists with a love of Cley.
Gail Brodholt’s The Art of Travel is now out of print and no additional copies will be produced. Gail’s black-and-white linocut prints appear in the smaller book Back to Black and a few copies remain available for purchase from this website.
Other books expected to have sold out in 2025 include the hardback version of The Printmaker’s Cat, our Brian Lewis book Blue Skies & Boat Trips, the Rob Barnes linocut collection A Fine Line and the big-selling Mascot Media guide to the beauty spots of Suffolk through the eyes of printmakers, entitled Suffolk Jewels.
